Closing the Gap for Disadvantaged Learners with NAHT Aspire

The course provides a comprehensive set of resources for schools to review their current provision for disadvantaged learners, including use of Pupil Premium funding, against proven best practice. It also introduces some key practical research-based strategies to close the attainment gap. It is designed for school leaders across all phases.

This course builds a deep but practical knowledge and understanding of what research and evidence shows makes a difference for disadvantaged and other vulnerable learners. It provides delegates with the NAHT Aspire Closing the Gap Review resources and explores how these can be used to review current provision, identify strengths and areas for development and plan the implementation of new research-based strategies.

The core NAHT Aspire Closing the Gap Review resource – The Closing the Gap Rubric is an evaluation framework that analyses all aspects of school provision from leadership, culture and ethos through to pedagogy, curriculum and learner and family involvement and how these can affect the success of disadvantaged learners. It supports the distribution of responsibility for the success of disadvantaged learners across all leaders, teachers and support staff in schools.

The programme for the day covers:

  • Reflection on the national and school needs of disadvantaged and vulnerable learners

  • Identification of common barriers and challenges in schools

  • Exploring the Closing the Gap Rubric – range, depth and structure and what it can do for your school

  • Using the Closing the Gap Rubric – options for self-evaluation in your school and initial planning for school reviews

  • Exploring the Closing the Gap Guide materials – how to use them for selected and focused support

  • Introducing learning conversations to explore and influence teachers’ planning, practice and impact on disadvantaged and vulnerable learners

  • Involving support staff in learning conversations

  • Planning for learning conversations in schools

  • Reflection on resolving the barriers and challenges identified – how can the Closing the Gap resources and learning conversations be used to address those barriers and challenges
