Reviewing and Redesigning the Primary Curriculum with NAHT Aspire

The course provides a comprehensive set of resources for schools to review their current curriculum and create a broad and balanced curriculum that is appropriate and inspiring for each and every school community. It is particularly pertinent given Ofsted’s renewed focus, from 2019, on curriculum breadth and balance and is designed for primary school Headteachers and primary school leaders with responsibility for curriculum.

This course affords delegates an opportunity to begin to review the current curriculum offering. It provides delegates with the NAHT Aspire Curriculum Review resources and explores how these can be used in schools. Delegates plan, strategically, for ways to involve staff in the collaborative development of a curriculum that is broad and balanced reflecting the needs, interests and cultures of the school community; where learners are well-prepared for the next stage of their education and their lives and are encouraged to understand their role and responsibility within the school and the wider community.

The core NAHT Curriculum Review resource – The Curriculum Review Rubric is an evaluation framework that analyses all aspects of curriculum design and delivery. It supports schools in implementing a precisely focused and comprehensive review that ensures schools develop their own broad and balanced curriculum – now emphasised as a key feature of a great school by Ofsted.

The programme for the day covers:

  • Reflection on the implications of the focus on curriculum in Ofsted’s 2019 Common Inspection Framework

  • Defining what we mean by curriculum, clarifying what we want from the curriculum and how this is informed by vision and values

  • Evaluation of curriculum models

  • Exploring the Curriculum Review Rubric – range, depth and structure and what it can do for your school

  • Using the Curriculum Review Rubric – options for curriculum review in your school

  • Exploring the Curriculum Review Handbook – how to use the guidance materials to build an effective review process

  • Considering the role of Subject Leaders in curriculum review, design and delivery – using the Subject Leader Handbook

  • Introduction of a model for designing all learning experiences

  • Planning for curriculum reviews in schools
